Lace Monitor Removed from Chicken Coop
This large monitor was removed from a client’s chicken coop in Chapel Hill. The Lace Monitor is an opportunistic feeder and will both hunt small animals and scavenge carcasses and eggs. The chicken coop loaded with eggs was just too tempting for this lizard!
These lizards have sharp claws and teeth and strong jaws, as well as the ability to whip their tail at perceived threats. While they can defend themselves, they will usually trying to run away into undergrowth or straight up a tree. This species is known to be an excellent climber, with large adults even able to quickly scale tall trees with ease.
